San Francisco 49ers defeat Los Angeles Rams in historic Australia opener

The San Francisco 49ers opened the NFL season with a 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Los Angeles scored first following a 41-yard catch by Puka Nacua that set up a Kyren Williams touchdown run. The 49ers countered with a 39-yard Brock Purdy touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson to hold a 10-7 lead at halftime. After the break, the 49ers offense surged behind Christian McCaffrey and a touchdown catch by Mike Evans. A key defensive stand by Fred Warner, who stopped Matthew Stafford on fourth-and-goal, helped preserve the lead. Following the game, Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin drew social media attention for his antics while participating in a kangaroo-themed gift presentation alongside the players.
