San Francisco 49ers prepare for season opener against Aaron Donald and Rams

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed his team holds complex feelings regarding the return of defensive tackle Aaron Donald to the Los Angeles Rams. The San Francisco 49ers are set to open their 2026-27 NFL season against the Rams, a matchup that now includes both Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett on the opposing defensive line. Shanahan noted that his staff celebrated the initial retirement of Aaron Donald in 2024 but experienced the opposite reaction upon learning of his return to the league this offseason. While the San Francisco 49ers hold a favorable historical record against the Los Angeles Rams during the tenure of Aaron Donald, the defensive tackle was instrumental in the team's victory during the 2022 NFC Championship Game. The upcoming season-opening game marks the first time the San Francisco 49ers will face the restructured Los Angeles Rams defensive front.
