Santos defender Mauro Ramos de Oliveira leaves a legacy of major titles

Mauro Ramos de Oliveira, a celebrated center-back who defined an era of Santos football, remains a central figure in the club’s history. Born in Poços de Caldas in 1930, he transitioned from amateur squads to a storied professional career that began at São Paulo in 1948. He joined Santos in 1960 for a then-record fee, anchoring a defense that earned him the nickname Martha Rocha for his elegance and technique. During his tenure at Vila Belmiro, he captained the side to consecutive Copa Libertadores titles in 1962 and 1963, alongside multiple Brazilian and São Paulo state championships. After his playing career, which included a stint in Mexico, Mauro returned to Santos as a coach in 1971. He managed 78 matches for the club before eventually retiring in his hometown, where he passed away in 2002 at the age of 72.
