Sharks name Macklin Celebrini as new captain following contract extension

Macklin Celebrini has been appointed the captain of the San Jose Sharks, following his signing of a five-year, $94 million contract. The announcement was made at a team gathering where former star Joe Thornton presented Celebrini with the captain's jersey. Celebrini becomes the youngest captain in Sharks history and the team's first captain since Logan Couture's retirement in April 2025. He previously served as an alternate captain and enters his third NHL season with 178 points in 152 regular-season games. The Sharks are set to open the 2026-27 season against the Florida Panthers on October 1.
