"Photo by WWE/Getty Images | WWE via Getty Images As of this writing, Sheamus is one of the hottest free agents in wrestling. This statement owes to the fact that—even at age 48—the Irish star’s name still carries considerable weight based on his long and decorated career. But could he still command a lucrative, multimillion-dollar contract in 2026 if he was instead singing in a choir? What if he was working in IT (Information Technology)? Well, we’ll never know, but the two careers mentioned above were once considerations for Sheamus. Before we take a journey back into Sheamus’ past, I would first like to give a hat tip to a Cageside Seats reader. Prior the publication of a “Before they were stars” story on another Irish superstar, Becky Lynch, I asked The Feed for suggestions. One of the names mentioned by user “Humanoid Sitting At Home” was Sheamus. Thank you, HSAH, for sending me down the interesting rabbit hole that is Sheamus’ life. Early Years Born Stephen Farrelly in Dublin, Ireland, Sheamus spent his school years singing in the Palestrina Choir. That’s right, The Celtic Warrior was in a boys’ choir, and his youthful singing practice actually gave him his first television exposure when the choir appeared on Irish chat shows. But a career in choir singing was not to be, and Sheamus gave up his musical pursuits at age 13. He found his true calling in sports, beginning with Gaelic football and rugby. He played the latter at the National College of Ireland while studying to achieve his eventual diploma. According to a Mirror story from 2006, Sheamus worked as an IT technician for a period of time after college. He has credited his amateur bodybuilder father for his lifelong interest in fitness, and his muscle paid off with work as a bodyguard. He told Express Night Out in 2009 that while working security at a club, one notable person he was tasked with personally protecting was none other than Bono from U2. “Bono’s cool; he’s always in his own little world,” he told the outlet. The Move to Wrestling Sheamus eventually made his way to the squared circle and trained at Larry Sharpe’s Monster Factory wrestling school in 2002, though he has said an early neck injury derailed his career for nearly two years. Under the name Sheamus O’Shaunessy, he began to make a name for himself on the European independent wrestling scene after his neck recovered. He debuted in Irish Whip Wrestling in 2004 and soon became one of the promotion’s biggest stars. One of his most notorious feuds in Irish Whip was with one Drew Galloway, a Scottish wrestler better known to WWE fans today as Drew McIntyre. During this time, Sheamus also began forming the in-ring persona that WWE fans would come to enjoy for years. He spoke to Express Night Out about the character he sought to develop. “I wanted something completely different. I wanted to get rid of the stereotypes of drunken paddies, and Lucky Charms, and Irish lads and donkey carts. I wanted to bring a more positive image, and back in the day the Celtic Warriors were the most feared warriors in Europe,” he said. Sheamus continued: “People were afraid to invade Ireland because the guys were all lunatics; they wouldn’t hesitate to just stand in your way or come down swinging axes and swords. A lot of Celtic mythology stuff is pretty deep and pretty interesting, and it’s been taken and put in different stories and different movies: Conan the Barbarian, Lord of the Rings. You can see it in a lot of those stories.” Finding Success in WWE Fans responded to his character and in-ring work, and he also caught the eye of WWE. In November 2006, he made his first appearance for the promotion in a supporting role at a Raw show in Manchester, England. During the show, Sheamus worked as a security guard tasked with trying to restrain DX from attacking Randy Orton and Edge moments after the duo was crowned new tag team champions. During the ensuing melee, Sheamus was hit with a Pedigree from Triple H for his troubles. The guest spot did lead to more opportunities, though. Both Sheamus and McIntyre received tryouts with WWE, and the Irish star soon signed a developmental deal with the company. Still working under the name Sheamus O’Shaunessy, he began competing in WWE’s developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) in 2007. After picking up titles in the promotion, he was promoted to WWE’s version of ECW in 2009 as a heel with “O’Shaunessy” dropped from his name. He was soon moved to Raw, and in December of 2009 (still his rookie year on the main roster), Sheamus captured the WWE Championship by defeating John Cena at that year’s TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view. Over the course of his nearly 20 years in the company, Sheamus held the WWE Championship three times and the World Heavyweight Championship once. He also won the U.S. Championship on three occasions, and the tag team championship multiple times. Sheamus holds the special distinction of being the first-ever Irish world champion in WWE history. Other accolades on his WWE resume include winning the King of the Ring tournament in 2010, as well as the 2012 Royal Rumble, and the 2015 Money in the Bank match. Next Steps? Outside of wrestling, Sheamus hosts a popular workout show on his YouTube channel, and he’s landed numerous acting roles, including on NCIS: Los Angeles. In July 2026, Fightful Select reported Sheamus would be leaving WWE when his contract expired in October. According to the wrestling news outlet, he had rejected a restructured deal from the company. Sheamus later confirmed his departure with a social media post that ended with a Gaelic message that translates to “goodbye my WWE friends.” Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Burger after Banger after Banger after Banger after 💔😔 slán mo WWE chairde 👋🏻 S. In late October, a reporter from Telemundo Deportes caught up with Sheamus. “I’m just taking time off,” Sheamus said after being referred to as a former wrester. “I’m just chilling, I’m just relaxing. I’m on vacation. A long vacation.” 🟡⚫ ¡VA CON EL DORTMUND!
