Sheppey Channel Champions begin English Channel swim relay

The Sheppey Channel Champions from the Isle of Sheppey commenced their relay swim across the English Channel at 06:06 BST on August 10, 2026. The team, consisting of six women, is navigating conditions that include seasickness, jellyfish, and passing warships. Their swim marks 100 years since Gertrude Ederle's historic crossing, and they aim to complete the challenge after 18 months of preparation. They are expected to swim for approximately 15-16 hours, with the possibility of covering more than 35 miles due to currents. The team is raising funds for SwimTayka, which provides swimming lessons and drowning prevention education.
