Shreyas Iyer began his captaincy of India’s T20 team with a record during the opening match against Ireland in Belfast on June 26. Iyer had previously captained 114 T20 matches, the most by any Indian before leading the national team. He opted to field first at the Civil Service Cricket Club, and despite speculation, teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not included in the playing XI. At 31 years and 202 days, Iyer is also the third-oldest player to debut as T20I captain for India. His previous T20I experience includes 1,104 runs from 52 matches since his debut against New Zealand in 2017.
