Skip Bayless critiques John Mateer's performance for Oklahoma in 2026

Skip Bayless has publicly criticized Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer for his performances during the 2026 season. Once considered a Heisman candidate, Mateer's play has declined, particularly in losses to Michigan and Georgia. In the 17-10 defeat against Michigan, he completed 17 of 33 passes for 189 yards, marking a struggle to maintain consistency. Previous injuries hampered Mateer's development, and there are increasing calls for Oklahoma to consider alternative quarterbacks. Despite the criticism, coach Brent Venables has reaffirmed Mateer as the starting quarterback before the upcoming matchup against Texas.
