South Sydney Rabbitohs prospect Charlie Poynton signs with Exeter Chiefs

South Sydney Rabbitohs utility Charlie Poynton has exited the club to join the Exeter Chiefs for the 2026-27 rugby union season. The 19-year-old previously represented Australia in rugby union at the under 16 and under 18 levels before entering the South Sydney pathways. Although slated for progression into the NSW Cup next year, Poynton has elected to pursue a professional career in the 15-man code in England. Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter confirmed the signing, noting the club's need for depth at fullback and wing due to existing injuries and player availability. Poynton, a former Manly Marlins junior, is eligible to represent Australia, New Zealand, or England at the international level. He joins the Gallagher Premiership side immediately to begin his transition back to the rugby union format.
