Steelers add running back Lew Nichols to 13-player practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed 13 players to the team's practice squad on Monday, including running back Lew Nichols. Nichols served as a preseason standout for the franchise for the past two seasons, rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries during the 2026 preseason. The team roster remains in transition following the Sunday trade of running back Kaleb Johnson to the Green Bay Packers. While rookie Eli Heidenreich remains on the active 53-man roster as a running back and wide receiver, the practice squad offers flexibility for the team. Rules allow the franchise to elevate practice squad players to the active roster for game day duty. Nichols previously joined the active roster for a November 2025 game against the Indianapolis Colts and remains a candidate for future elevations.
