Smith stated his responses were part of a tactical effort to challenge the President to a debate, rather than an act of submission. The tension began in June when Smith claimed the President's attendance at the NBA Finals acted as a distraction for the New York Knicks. In retaliation, the President characterized Smith as having a low IQ. Smith maintained that he intentionally chose not to escalate the confrontation to maintain the possibility of a direct, future debate regarding political issues.
