The Supreme Court of India has directed the Board of Control for Cricket in India and all state cricket associations to explain why they should not operate under the National Sports Governance Act 2025. A bench including Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V Mohana issued the order on Tuesday. This intervention follows 12 years of judicial involvement in cricket administration, beginning with a 2014 petition that ultimately led to the implementation of the Lodha committee reforms. Bringing the cricket bodies under the new legislation could transfer ongoing litigation to a dedicated sports tribunal and establish standardized governance, financial, and ethical regulations. The BCCI and its state affiliates must now file formal responses to justify their current administrative structure. This legal process will determine whether the oversight of Indian cricket remains under the judiciary or transitions to the regulatory framework established by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
