Susquehanna defeats Union 23-17 in overtime season opener

Susquehanna defeated Union 23-17 in overtime Saturday at Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady. Union held a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but a 34-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Wright to Reese Gaughan tied the game with two seconds remaining in regulation. In the overtime period, Susquehanna’s Jaydon Handy blocked a Union field goal attempt, which was returned for a touchdown by Bezy Nwanonyiri to end the contest. Union quarterback Cole Brisson threw three interceptions in his first collegiate start and the team finished with 211 total yards compared to 424 for Susquehanna. Union coach Jon Drach attributed the loss to self-imposed mistakes and poor communication in the secondary. The Garnet Chargers are scheduled to host SUNY Cortland next Saturday.
