German defending champion Tatjana Maria was surprised not to receive a wild card for this year’s Queen's but has been overwhelmed by the positive response from members at the London club. Mother-of-two Maria starred last year when women’s tennis returned to Queen’s for the first time since 1973 and won the WTA 500 event to scoop an honorary lifetime membership.

Defending Queen’s champion Tatjana Maria said she was surprised not to receive a wild card into this year’s HSBC Championships main draw, forcing her to come through qualifying. The German secured her place in the draw by defeating Britain’s Lily Miyazaki and then Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova in qualifying on Sunday after not being awarded a singles wild card by tournament organisers.
