Teenage athlete shifts to bowls after developing joint condition

Thomas, a 16-year-old from Bedfordshire, turned to competitive bowls after receiving a diagnosis of Osteochondritis Dissecans in 2023. The condition, which affects cartilage and bone in his joints, forced him to stop swimming and football following an injury to his arm. Despite undergoing surgery on his elbows and knees, Thomas remains active in the sport, representing Bedfordshire in the Eastern Counties League and various youth competitions. The teenager recently faced an obstacle regarding his education when he was initially told bowls could not be used as the chosen sport for his BTEC Level 3 qualification. Following concerns raised about the exclusion of the sport, Pearson clarified that bowls is an accredited activity for the curriculum. The awarding body is now working with the educational institution to review the options available to ensure the student can proceed with his studies while continuing his athletic training.
