Tennessee football debuts 37 players in victory over Furman

Tennessee opened its 2026 football season on September 5 with a 59-6 win against Furman at Neyland Stadium. A total of 37 players made their program debut in the contest, including 19 freshmen. Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon led the effort with five touchdowns, becoming the first SEC player to record three passing and two rushing scores in an FBS debut since 2010. Eight newcomers earned their first career starts for the Vols, featuring several defensive contributors and tight end Trent Thomas. Head coach Josh Heupel cited Brandon’s poise and decision-making as key factors in the team's 638-yard offensive performance. The win moves Tennessee to a 1-0 record to start the new season.
