The Chronicle seeks stories of impactful Bay Area coaches

The Chronicle is inviting submissions for the John Beam Community Action Award, honoring local coaches who have significantly influenced student-athletes and their communities. The award aims to recognize those who, like John Beam, have helped young athletes thrive both on and off the field. This initiative follows the legacy of Beam, who dedicated over 40 years to coaching and mentoring in Oakland before his tragic death in 2025. Readers can share their experiences with coaches who embody Beam's values, and these submissions will guide the award selections. Initial co-winners of Beam's legacy award were Virgil Hart and Charlie Ramirez.
