The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 starts from New York City this week

The inaugural Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 is scheduled to depart from New York City on Wednesday, September 2. Six international teams comprised of two women and two men will navigate foiling IMOCA 60 monohulls across the Atlantic Ocean toward Lorient, France. While the fleet departs from New York, the official race start occurs at a virtual line approximately 145 miles offshore to minimize risks to marine wildlife. Race Director Phil Lawrence and Damian Foxall are coordinating with 11th Hour Racing to implement biodiversity exclusion zones and collect climate data throughout the sprint. These measures aim to protect both crews and marine mammals, particularly in areas frequented by the Atlantic Right Whale. The vessels are capable of speeds exceeding 30 knots, increasing the necessity for strict navigation protocols during the transatlantic crossing.
