Thomas Meunier joins Sunderland after missing out on Manchester United move

Former Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier joined Sunderland on a free transfer this summer. The 34-year-old Belgian right-back previously stated he would favor a move to Manchester United, describing himself as a boyhood fan of the club. Despite his long-standing interest in the Old Trafford side, he opted to sign with Sunderland following a convincing pitch from the club's leadership. Manchester United did not pursue a right-back during the summer window, prioritizing instead the strengthening of their left flank. Michael Carrick currently utilizes Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui at the right-back position. Meunier now competes in the Premier League following previous stints in Belgium, France, Germany, and Turkey. The defender recently noted his appreciation for the documentary series Sunderland ‘til I Die, which influenced his decision to move to the club.
