The Detroit Tigers designated outfielder James Outman for assignment on August 23 to make room for rookie pitcher Andrew Sears on the 40-man roster. Outman, who had been recovering from a concussion, struggled at the plate with a.183 batting average and did not hit in his last two rehab games. His release follows the emergence of Max Clark as the regular center fielder. Sears, who posted 9⅔ scoreless innings in Triple-A, is expected to make an impact in the upcoming series against the Tampa Bay Rays, although his role as either a starter or reliever remains undecided. The Tigers face the Rays in a three-game series starting August 24 at Comerica Park.
