T.J. Houshmandzadeh urges Bryce Underwood to leave Michigan football program

Former NFL receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is advising Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood to transfer following recent public comments from head coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham suggested that the starting quarterback position is not guaranteed after Underwood’s performance in the team’s 13-12 season-opening win against Western Michigan on September 5, 2026. In that contest, Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown while adding 47 rushing yards. The Wolverines secured the victory on a late Hail Mary pass to JJ Buchanan. Underwood, a former five-star recruit, threw for 2,428 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions during his freshman season. Despite the coaching staff's attempt to retain him after the recent hiring, speculation regarding his future in Ann Arbor continues to grow after the coach publicly cast doubt on his status as the primary starter.
