Lister started his basketball career at San Jacinto Junior College before transferring to Arizona State University, where he averaged 15.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in his senior season. He was selected 21st overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1981 NBA draft and played five seasons for them. The center also had stints with the Seattle SuperSonics, Golden State Warriors, and joined the Celtics in 1995 as part of a trade. Lister played 110 games with the Celtics, averaging 2.0 points and 3.8 rebounds before leaving for the Portland Trail Blazers in 1997.
