Top Shelf euthanized following training injury at Saratoga Race Course

Top Shelf, an unraced 2-year-old filly trained by Jena Antonucci, was euthanized Sunday after sustaining a right front leg injury during a morning workout at Saratoga Race Course. Following the injury on the Oklahoma training track turf, the filly was transported to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, where the extent of her condition necessitated euthanasia. This incident follows several other horse fatalities at the track during the current meet. Marvelous Madison, a 4-year-old filly, was euthanized previously after a displaced fracture was discovered following the Yaddo Stakes on Aug. 30. Other recent deaths at the facility include Stirring Words, which suffered a cardiac event, and Magic Chuck, which sustained a scapula fracture. The state Gaming Commission Equine Death and Breakdown Database continues to track these occurrences as the meet progresses.
