Tyler Shough leads New Orleans Saints against Detroit Lions in season opener

Summary

The New Orleans Saints open the 2026 NFL season on Sunday with a road game against the Detroit Lions. Quarterback Tyler Shough enters the matchup as the team's clear-cut starter following a productive end to his rookie season. The game serves as a test for Shough to demonstrate his comfort in the offense after completing his first full offseason with the team. Coaches and staff expect the quarterback to exhibit greater confidence and better field awareness than he showed in his debut year. A strong performance in Detroit would provide the organization with an indicator of his growth and long-term potential under center. The contest represents the beginning of the regular season for both teams as they seek to establish early momentum.
