UCLA fires athletic director Martin Jarmond amid ongoing financial deficits

UCLA chancellor Julio Frenk dismissed athletic director Martin Jarmond on Monday, citing a unsustainable $241.1 million financial deficit accumulated during his tenure. Former Lakers executive Tim Harris will serve as the interim athletic director and CEO on a pro bono basis effective immediately. Jarmond held the position since 2020 and will receive the remaining balance of his contract, which is estimated between $5.9 million and $6.5 million. The university plans to conduct a national search for a permanent replacement. This leadership change occurs just days before the UCLA football team opens its season against California. Jarmond faced criticism for the performance of the football program under former coach DeShaun Foster and for his approach to name, image and likeness initiatives.
