UConn football coach Jason Candle delays naming starting quarterback for opener

UConn continues its preparation for Saturday’s season opener against Lafayette without a designated starting quarterback. Coach Jason Candle said Monday that the position battle among Jake Merklinger, Kalieb Osborne, and Tucker McDonald remains ongoing with no clear separator identified. While Candle expressed a preference to have solidified the starter earlier, he stated that the high level of competition from all three players made the decision difficult. The staff plans to continue evaluating the group during practices leading up to the first snap against Lafayette. Defensive back Saxton Suchanic stated that the team remains confident in whoever is ultimately selected to lead the offense. Only Osborne has collegiate starting experience, having made a single start in last season's Boca Raton Bowl.
