Ukrainian minister criticizes FIA decision to allow Russian competitors

Ukrainian Minister for Youth and Sport Matvii Bidnyi stated that the FIA was incorrect to lift its ban on Russian and Belarusian competitors. The ban was originally imposed in February 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine but was rescinded by the FIA world motorsport council on August 3 this year. Bidnyi argued that the circumstances necessitating the initial sanction have not improved, citing ongoing daily attacks in Ukraine as evidence of continued aggression. While the FIA aligned its policy with recent updates from the International Olympic Committee, other organizations like World Athletics maintain their restrictions. The Russian Athletics Federation is currently challenging those sanctions through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The FIA maintains that it continues to prohibit competitions within Russia and Belarus while stating it will monitor the situation for potential future policy adjustments.
