UMass upsets Rutgers in season opener at SHI Stadium

UMass defeated Rutgers 37-21 in a season-opening college football game at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. Despite entering the game as 30-point favorites, the Scarlet Knights surrendered 30 unanswered points to the Minutemen. UMass recorded 397 total yards and forced four Rutgers turnovers to end a 16-game losing streak. Following the loss, Greg Schiano took responsibility for the performance of his team. Fireworks previously scheduled for a Rutgers victory were set off at the stadium after the game despite the result. Rutgers now prepares to face Boston College and USC in upcoming matchups.
