Undertaker expresses frustration over missed dream match with Sting

The Undertaker vs. Sting is a dream match that never happened during Sting’s brief run in WWE circa 2015. For some reason, we instead got Triple H going over Sting at WrestleMania 31. WWE really tried to convince fans that Sting vs. Triple H was also a dream match, but I can only speak for myself when I say it’s never a match I dreamed about when I watched both WWF and WCW during their Monday night war. The Undertaker has been asked so many times over the years about why the match with Sting never happened. At first he downplayed hype for the match by saying things like it sounded better on paper than in reality, and the window was basically closed by the time Sting got to WWE because they were both so much older. Meanwhile, Sting said he had spoken to Taker about his interest in the match, but his enthusiasm for it “wasn’t necessarily reciprocated.” The Dead Man changed his tune a bit more recently, as he began to put the blame on Vince McMahon for why it never happened, while still expressing doubts about how good the match would be. On today’s edition of his Six Feet Under podcast, Taker took things up a notch by calling it a “no-brainer” match to book that would have done huge business for WWE. He has no idea why Vince wasn’t into the idea. “Yeah obviously, the people had already been clamoring for that match for a long time, and it seems like a no-brainer. Why on earth would you not do that? But for whatever reason, Vince did not see it, didn’t like it, didn’t want it. And I was like, this is a home run. This is an easy main event for a pay-per-view. But I don’t really have an answer. I never really had an in-depth conversation with Vince about why he didn’t want to do it. My goodness, a Sting vs. Undertaker [match]? Again, he obviously knows more about business than I do, but that one just seems like a home run…they decided to walk the guy instead of pitch to him? I don’t know what happened there. I mean, I don’t have any regrets. It wasn’t my decision. But, my goodness, I would have loved to have been able to have that match. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.” Undertaker says he couldn’t explain to Sting why McMahon didn’t want to book the dream match. He called it “the biggest miss” at a WrestleMania. “I remember running into Sting. I think it was after the WrestleMania that we didn’t work. I remember we were on the same plane together talking. I was like, I don’t know. Like, this is beyond me. I don’t know. I don’t know why. But it is what it is, man, I guess. Yeah, I think Sting, that’s probably got to be the biggest miss of a WrestleMania. Those two characters, that would have done some incredible business. Sorry, I don’t know.
