Vancouver Whitecaps sign right back Rui Modesto from Italian club Udinese

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced the acquisition of 26-year-old Angolan international defender Rui Modesto from the Italian Serie A club Udinese on Tuesday. The right back has signed a contract spanning the remainder of the 2026 MLS season through 2029, with an additional club option for 2030. Modesto previously played for FC Honka, AIK Fotboll, and Palermo, accumulating 28 goals and 32 assists across 160 European appearances. Sporting director Axel Schuster stated the team targeted Modesto for his pace and work rate. The Whitecaps currently lead the Western Conference with 43 points following their 2025 appearances in the MLS Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup finals. Modesto, who holds seven caps for Angola, was included on the country's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations roster.
