Vanderbilt starting tight end Cole Spence is listed as questionable for the Commodores' season opener against Austin Peay. Coach Clark Lea stated on September 3 that Spence sustained an undisclosed injury during game week. While the coaching staff expressed hope that the injury is not long-term, Lea indicated he does not intend to rush the player back onto the field. Spence was included on the initial depth chart released September 1 and was expected to take on a larger receiving role this season following the departure of Eli Stowers to the NFL. The matchup against the Governors is scheduled for September 5 at FirstBank Stadium. Spence previously missed the 2023 season due to a torn ACL but played through the 2024 and 2025 seasons without major injury complications.
