Vergil Ortiz scored a big knockout win over Erickson Lubin. | Getty Images Immediately follow last night’s big super welterweight fight where Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis stopped defending titleholder Xander Zayas in seven rounds to become a two-division unified champion, Vergil Ortiz popped up on social media to give his immediate reaction. Boy, was it harsh. Right after Boots’ win, Ortiz would declare that he would assuredly knock Boots out whenever they meet, and also derided Zayas in the process for what he called a quit job after getting dropped for the three times in the fight. “Yea, I’m sleeping Jaron,” Ortiz began with a post on X before rattling off a series more. “If I get him like that I promise you I get him out of there. “Xander you looked straight to your corner after you got dropped that last time. You’re a p-ssy. You did better than I thought you were gonna do but you’re a quitter, I can’t believe I just saw you do that,” Ortiz Yea I’m sleeping Jaron — Vergil Ortiz Jr. (@VergilOrtiz) June 28, 2026 If I get him like that I promise you I get him out of there — Vergil Ortiz Jr. (@VergilOrtiz) June 28, 2026 Xander you looked straight to your corner after you got dropped that last time you’re a pussy you did better than I thought you were gonna do but you’re a quitter I can’t believe I just saw you do that — Vergil Ortiz Jr. (@VergilOrtiz) June 28, 2026 Ortiz would also take aim at DAZN commentator Sergio Mora, saying his position in ridiculing both fighters are valid. “Sorry I wasn’t given free belts with one of the weakest resumes in boxing!” Ortiz would post. “And sorry for clowning on the guy who has been clowning me for invalid reasons for over a year. If those circumstances make me look bad in your eyes then you’re just ignorant. I earned my shot before [X]ander did a thousand times over, you’re gonna blame ME for not winning a title? You’re gonna blame ME for not receiving those fights against those people who 99% of the boxing world probably can’t name? If I had won those belts from those opponents everyone would be clowning the credibility of my belts. Out of everyone on that broadcast I at least expected the boxer to understand.” @TheLatinSnake_ sorry I wasn’t given free belts with one of the weakest résumés in boxing! And sorry for clowning on the guy who has been clowning me for invalid reasons for over a year 😂😂 if those circumstances make me look bad in your eyes then you’re just ignorant 🤷🏻‍♂️ I… — Vergil Ortiz Jr. (@VergilOrtiz) June 28, 2026 Ortiz, 28, hasn’t fought since a November 2025 win over Erickson Lubin and has been sidelined ever since as he’s been in an ongoing legal dispute with his Golden Boy promoter. In fact, Ortiz was originally meant to be the opponent for this very fight, but that couldn’t happen because of his promotional dispute. Recent interviews have quoted Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya saying things have been moving in a positive direction lately though, and he expects Ortiz to be back in the ring before the year is out.
