Villarreal came from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against Racing Santander in their opening La Liga match on August 16. Racing Santander took the lead through an Andres Martin penalty and a long-range strike from Sergio Martinez. Villarreal's Pape Gueye reduced the deficit just before halftime, followed quickly by Nicolas Pepe equalizing shortly after the break. Both teams had opportunities to clinch victory in the second half, but neither could find the net again. Espanyol is set to host Levante later on the same day.
