The News Leader has opened its poll for the athlete of the week for Oct. 5-10. Nominations include Zakarre Hymes-Williams from Stuarts Draft football, who had nine catches for 173 yards and a touchdown in a 21-0 victory over Staunton. Nolan Deaver of Wilson Memorial football scored three touchdowns in a 42-7 win against Rockbridge County. Other nominees are Maddie Gale from Fort Defiance volleyball, who excelled in two matches, Jackson Fitzgerald from Riverheads football, and Brady Richie, who helped Buffalo Gap golf qualify for the state tournament.
