Walker Kessler officially joins Lakers in sign-and-trade deal

Walker Kessler is now officially a member of the Los Angeles Lakers after a sign-and-trade deal was finalized on July 9, 2026. The Lakers acquired Kessler, a 7-foot-2 center previously with the Utah Jazz, in exchange for two future first-round draft picks and pick swaps, while signing him to a four-year, $130 million contract. Kessler, 24, has averaged 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks over his first four NBA seasons. His addition addresses Lakers' defensive needs at center, a position they have struggled with since the 2019-20 season. Lakers president Rob Pelinka emphasized Kessler's skills as a shot-blocker and his fit alongside stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
