One day after finalizing their initial 53-man roster, the Washington Commanders moved Laremy Tunsil and Johnny Newton to the reserve/injured list. Both players carry a designation to return later this season. Tunsil sustained a triceps injury in early August, while Newton suffered a pectoral injury during the preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. To fill the open roster spots, the team re-signed cornerback Fabian Moreau and defensive tackle Shy Tuttle. Moreau adds depth to a secondary currently featuring Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, and Rasul Douglas, following the retirement of Ahkello Witherspoon. Tuttle returns to the team as a backup option behind Tim Settle at nose tackle. The club continues preparations for the regular season opener against Philadelphia in 13 days.
