Wayne Bennett has confirmed that Matt Dufty will start at fullback for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in this Friday evening's elimination final against the Newcastle Knights. Dufty replaces Jye Gray, who occupied the role in the Rabbitohs' previous Round 27 fixture. Bennett cited Dufty's decision-making ability and his tactical contributions to teammates Cody and Bud Sullivan as the primary reasons for the selection. While acknowledging questions regarding Dufty's defensive performance, the coach opted to prioritize the fullback's offensive contributions and experience. Dufty, who joined the club on a train and trial deal, has averaged 227 metres per game during his 14 appearances this season. Gray, who signed a long-term contract extension with the club, has seen limited first-grade action since Round 18. The Rabbitohs and Knights are scheduled to meet in Sydney for the knockout match.
