Wheaton defeats Mount Union in season opener to end regular season streak

No. 5 Wheaton defeated No. 3 Mount Union 24-23 in the season opener for both football teams in Alliance. The loss ended a streak of 85 consecutive regular season victories for Mount Union, which also saw its 38-game season-opener winning streak snap. Wheaton established a 17-7 halftime lead before Mount Union tied the game on a 24-yard field goal from Connell Rafferty late in the third quarter. Malachi Jones caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Mark Forucci with 5:28 remaining to give Wheaton the permanent lead. Mount Union scored a late touchdown on a 1-yard run by Kayden Minner, but a blocked extra point with 22 seconds left sealed the defeat. The Purple Raiders failed to recover an ensuing onside kick.
