Wilma Nielsen wins 1,500 in pro debut at Prefontaine Classic

Wilma Nielsen triumphed in the women's 1,500 meters at the Prefontaine Classic on July 3 at Hayward Field. After trailing leader Lucia Stafford, who opened a significant gap, Nielsen surged past her in the final stretch, finishing in 4:05.6. This victory comes just weeks after Nielsen's fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, where she signed with Nike. Juliette Whittaker claimed second place in 4:05.78, and Lindsey Butler finished third in 4:06.46. Oregon high school athlete Ellery Lincoln set a personal best, finishing eighth in 4:07.06, marking one of the fastest times for a high school girl in the event.
