Wisconsin football coach Luke Fickell declines to designate a backup quarterback

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell has not named a secondary quarterback ahead of the team's season opener on September 6 against Notre Dame. Colton Joseph remains the established starter, while Deuce Adams and Ryan Hopkins have both received second-team repetitions during practices this summer. The coaching staff previously indicated a decision might be reached by the conclusion of the preseason, but Fickell stated on August 31 that he is content to let the competition continue. Other players in the quarterback room include Danny O’Neil and Carter Smith, who both saw playing time during the 2025 season. Fickell noted that the current arrangement allows the team to avoid specific schematic changes typically required when shifting between different backup options. The staff will make further adjustments if necessary as the season progresses.
