Wisconsin records lowest home football opener attendance since the 1990s

Wisconsin football recorded an announced attendance of 65,274 for its home opener against Western Illinois. While the Badgers secured a 36-9 victory, the crowd size marks the lowest for a home opening game since 1992, when the team hosted Bowling Green. This follows a 13.1% decline in season ticket sales ahead of the 2026 campaign. Official attendance counts often differ from the number of tickets actually scanned at the venue, as the program previously averaged over 17,000 no-shows in 2025. Head coach Luke Fickell noted during fall camp that the responsibility for driving interest and filling the stadium rests on the team's ability to win and perform at a high level. The program had consistently maintained attendance figures above 73,000 during the tenures of several former head coaches, excluding the 2020 pandemic-impacted season.
