World Nomad Games open in Bishkek featuring 43 traditional sport disciplines

The sixth edition of the World Nomad Games commenced Thursday in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, with delegations from over 100 nations participating. The opening ceremony drew 21 heads of state, including leaders from China, India, and Russia, who were present for the concurrent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. Athletes will compete across 43 traditional disciplines, with equestrian events, national wrestling styles, and archery serving as the core of the program. This year marks a significant expansion in participation, with countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Algeria, and the UK fielding teams for the first time. Beyond the athletic contests, the games include ethnographic festivals and cultural presentations focused on the history of the Central Asian steppe. Originally established in 2014, the event is recognized by the United Nations as a platform for international dialogue.
