Zee Entertainment announced a deal to broadcast the FIFA World Cup in India, just days before the tournament begins on June 11. Ending a months-long negotiation, this agreement provides fans access to matches through Zee's new sports channels and ZEE5 app. Estimates suggest the deal is valued between $30 million and $35 million, significantly lower than FIFA's initial asking price of $100 million. The World Cup will feature a record 48 teams and 104 matches, running until July 19. Zee's entry into this market increases competition against JioStar, which previously held broadcasting rights.
- •Zee's deal covers 39 FIFA events through 2034
- •World Cup matches will air on new sports channels
- •FIFA's original rights ask was about $100 million
- •Global match timings will mostly run through Indian nights
- •Matches will take place in the US, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
