Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert focuses on ball security for upcoming classic

Alcorn State head coach Cedric Thomas expects quarterback Jaylon Tolbert to improve ball security during the upcoming Southern Heritage Classic against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The matchup is scheduled for September 12 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis and will serve as the Braves' SWAC conference opener. Tolbert struggled during a Week 1 loss to Southern Miss, finishing with 119 passing yards and four interceptions. Coach Thomas attributed the poor performance to Tolbert forcing big plays instead of utilizing checkdown options. Despite the turnovers, the senior quarterback has effectively extended plays in the pocket and avoided sacks during his first two appearances this season. The coaching staff views the upcoming game as a chance for the team to establish a playoff-level mentality in their first contest against an FCS opponent.
