Alex Golesh elects to use weekly rotating team captains at Auburn

Auburn head football coach Alex Golesh announced on Monday, Aug. 31, that the program will not designate season-long captains for the 2026 campaign. Unlike his predecessor Hugh Freeze, who appointed captains for each of his three seasons at the university, Golesh opted against a traditional voting process. The coaching staff plans to select a different group of captains each week throughout the season. Golesh indicated he felt the team was not currently prepared for permanent leadership designations. Instead, he plans to monitor player performance and leadership qualities during the season to determine who earns the role on a week-to-week basis. The coach noted that more than a dozen players have already demonstrated leadership potential during the offseason period.
