ROH Women’s World Champion Athena holds the title for over 1360 days after winning the belt in December 2022. Earlier this summer, she surpassed the modern-day championship record previously held by Roman Reigns. Athena is now tracking toward December, when she expects to surpass the 1474-day reign of Hulk Hogan, who held the WWF championship between 1984 and 1988. In an interview with WFAA, she identified this upcoming milestone as her next immediate goal. While acknowledging the historical significance of Bruno Sammartino’s total reign, Athena stated her intention to maintain her current championship status indefinitely. She currently characterizes herself as the longest-reigning champion of the modern-day era across both men’s and women’s professional wrestling divisions.

- 10:53 PMCageside Seats — Athena is targeting Hulk Hogan next after surpassing Roman Reigns’ championship record
"ROH Women’s World Champion Athena calls herself the “Forever Champion,” because she won that belt in December 2022 and has held onto it for over 1360 days. Earlier this summer, she surpassed WWE star Roman Reigns’ modern-day championship record for the longest world title reign. The “modern-day” qualifier is thrown in there a lot for lengthy title runs these days, like when CM Punk held the WWE championship throughout all of 2012, because it’s hard to imagine any current wrestler in a major promotion holding a world championship for four consecutive years. But Athena is on track to reach that mark in December. She is looking to put a dent in the “modern-day” qualifier that month when she surpasses Hulk Hogan’s 1474 day reign as WWF champion from 1984 through 1988. In an interview this week with WFAA, Athena made it clear that she’s coming for you, Hulk Hogan. “I’m the longest reigning champion in company history. Not only that, a few weeks ago I actually became the longest reigning champion of the modern-day era, man or woman. So I’m the most official longest reigning champion currently, at this point in time.” The longest reigning champion ever is Bruno Sammartino, who is absolutely phenomenal, and as we would say, a complete unit. But I think my next goal, which is very immediate, is Christmas. Because then I will surpass Hulk Hogan’s longest reign as well. So that’s the goal right now. But the goal is to keep it forever.” Are you counting down the days until Athena moves ahead of Hulk Hogan in the record books, or does none of this matter because ROH is AEW’s minor league promotion that only the sicko-est of wrestling sickos are watching? Now that she’s left Roman Reigns in the dust, let me know your thoughts on Athena’s pursuit of Hogan and Sammartino in the comments below, Cagesiders.
