Cam Newton holds NFL record for rookie passing yards in debut game

Cam Newton set an NFL record for passing yards by a rookie in his first career game during a 2011 contest against the Arizona Cardinals. Newton completed 24 of 37 passes for 422 yards in the 28-21 loss for the Carolina Panthers. While Andrew Luck eventually surpassed Newton’s rookie season passing total in the following year, the 422-yard single-game mark for a debut remains an NFL record. As the current NFL season begins, rookies Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson are unlikely to challenge this record. Both players currently occupy backup roles behind veteran starters Kirk Cousins and Matthew Stafford, respectively. Neither player is expected to see immediate action as a starter, leaving Newton’s debut performance record intact for at least another week.
