Cardinals place JJ Wetherholt on injured list with wrist tendinitis

The St. Louis Cardinals placed rookie second baseman JJ Wetherholt on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to right wrist tendinitis. Wetherholt, who had been playing through discomfort for several weeks, will undergo further evaluation by a medical specialist. In a corresponding roster move, the team recalled infielder César Prieto. The injury comes as St. Louis continues to trail in the National League wild-card standings, currently sitting four and a half games back of the third spot. Wetherholt had been considered a leading candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year award, holding a 4.4 WAR and hitting 17 home runs. Other contenders for the honor include Mets outfielder Carson Benge, Mets pitcher Nolan McLean, and Reds infielder Sal Stewart.
