During an interview, Chelsea Green referred to Rhea Ripley as the rightful champion despite holding the Interim WWE Women's Championship. Green emphasized the need for a match between them to determine permanent championship status. Ripley is currently sidelined with a knee injury, and WWE has not confirmed whether Green's title win is fully recognized. The situation could lead to a unification match once Ripley returns, potentially early next year.

"PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 7: Interim WWE Women's Championship Chelsea Green makes her entrance during SmackDown at Xfinity Mobile Arena on August 7, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Brien Adams/WWE via Getty Images) | WWE via Getty Images We don’t know when Rhea Ripley will return from her knee injury and WWE has yet to make official whether or not the woman who won the Interim women’s championship, Chelsea Green, is being recognized as the rightful title holder. They’ve been calling her the champ on television but for her part, she’s acting like Ripley is still the rightful champion. During an interview with Etalk, she was asked about a dream match and had this to say: “I’ve had 13 years to think about who my dream opponent would be but I think it’s only fair that I say Rhea Ripley considering I am technically the Interim women’s champion and Rhea Ripley is the WWE women’s champion. I think we need to duke it out for a position of maybe permanent residency.” That sure makes it sound like no plans have been made to make any changes to the Interim title and they’ll allow Ripley to recover and come back with her championship in hand. It makes for an easy return storyline, and defaults to a unification match at a major show. Assuming she’s back by early next year, there will be plenty of options for WWE. Agree with going about it this way?
