CM Punk appeared on the latest episode of Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? podcast, and at one point they discussed how they’ve both been contacted by the FBI due to death threats. During the interview, which dropped on Monday (July 13), Punk got to the topic of death threats after speaking with McMahon and co-host Elyse Dudzinski about some of the fallbacks of social media, including misinformation being spread through A.I.-generated images and made-up quotes. McMahon brought up Punk’s recent win on Raw over Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship, and then she shared some graphics and quotes attributed to WWE stars. This included alleged messaged from Logan Paul, Becky Lynch, and Seth Rollins, all of which disparaged Punk. “This is why I don’t f*** with social media. These are like A.I.-generated. These are fake quotes,” Punk said. “Seth did not tweet this. Becky did not tweet this.” The Second City Saint continued: “I do not say this lightly: These are mentally ill people who, I mean, I couldn’t imagine making up fake tweets that somebody else said. But I think the problem, and it’s not just in our business, I think it’s a societal thing, is people will instantly see that, and then they believe it.” Punk admitted there’s some complexity on the issue for him, since he’s “in the business of toying with people’s emotions.” “So if somebody’s going to read that, and they’re going to believe it, that helps me in a way, you know?” he said before adding that he also someone who “walks through parking lots with his wife, who has his head on a swivel, because those people are out there.” Punk was then asked: “Do you know if there’s a death threat against you, the FBI has to call you and notify you?” “Yes,” he said. Stephanie added: “I know that, too.” “It’s funny that you both know that,” Dudzinski said. “Yeah. I think they’re pretty slack on that too, by the way. I don’t think they’re catching all of them,” Punk said. “But there’s been a few phone calls, absolutely.“ Stephanie goes on to say that such calls with authorities generally involves being informed that a threat has been made but that nothing is usually done due to the location of the person making the threat “or whatever the intel is.” “All it takes is that one time,” Punk noted.
